    Alert delivery and the Inbox

Available on: Web · iOS · Android

    On this page

When an alert fires, two things happen. scanr records it in your Inbox, always. Then it sends it to the channels its delivery profile picks, unless something holds it back: quiet hours, a pause, a cooldown or a daily limit. The Inbox tells you which happened, channel by channel.

    Channels

Set up channels in Alerts > Delivery > Destinations. Connect a channel once and every profile can use it.

    • Push. A phone registers once you allow notifications and have an alert switched on. Each phone shows when it was last seen.
    • Browser push. Each browser is set up on its own. On iPhone and iPad, add scanr to your Home Screen first, then turn on alerts from there. You can't set it up from the app.
    • Email. Type an address and click Add. scanr emails a link that works for 15 minutes. Until you click it, the address shows Waiting for verification. Email is off until you turn it on for a profile or an alert. Every alert email has a link to stop emails about that one alert.
    • Send test alert on a channel's card sends a test to that channel, so you can check it arrives.

    Delivery profiles

A delivery profile is a named route: which channels an alert sends to, and whether quiet hours hold it. Each alert uses one profile. Change a profile and every alert on it follows.

A struck-through chip is a channel the profile doesn't send to.

    ProfileWhat it does
StandardYour default. Every alert uses it unless you pick another. Its channel chips are your account's default channels. Quiet hours hold it.
UrgentThe same channels as Standard, but it delivers during quiet hours. Use it for the alerts you want at 3 AM.
CustomYour own, up to 10, such as "Market hours" or "Phone off". Click New profile, name it, and set its chips. Any channel you don't change follows Standard.

Deleting a custom profile moves its alerts to Standard.

Pick a profile for one alert

    1. Open the alert in the composer.
    2. Under Deliver with, pick a profile.
    3. Optional: under Channels, turn a channel on or off for this alert alone. The line under each channel shows what it does without your change, such as "Account default: on". The reset link under Channels undoes your changes.
    4. Save.

A channel with nothing connected shows Connect in settings. You can turn it off, but not on, until you connect it. Manage profiles opens the Delivery tab.

Routing (in the sidebar under Alerts) shows every alert's path from alert to profile to channel, with line widths for how many fires took each path. Drag an alert onto another profile to re-route it, or use Trace to follow one alert end to end.

    Quiet hours

Quiet hours hold alerts overnight, or whenever you set them. A held alert is not sent later. It still lands in the Inbox.

    1. Open Delivery > Quiet hours.
    2. Switch on Hold alerts during quiet hours. It starts at 10 PM to 7 AM.
    3. Set From and To in whole hours. The window can run past midnight.
    4. Pick the Time zone. If your device is in another zone, click Use it to switch.
    5. Optional: switch on Hold email too. It's off to start, because your mail app has its own Do Not Disturb.

Quiet hours never hold in-app alerts. Alerts on a profile set to Deliver during quiet hours, such as Urgent, still come through. Quiet hours apply every day of the week.

    Pause and mute

Delivery > Pause everything stops every alert from sending, for 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, 1 week, or until you turn them back on. Your alerts keep watching and the Inbox keeps filling. Resume alerts ends it early.

To quiet one alert, use Mute until tomorrow's session on the web, in My alerts or in an Inbox alert's detail. It keeps firing into the Inbox, and nothing is sent until 4:00 AM ET on the next trading day.

    Daily limits

Each kind of alert has its own daily budget of notifications, so a busy scan can't use up your price alerts.

    FreeSuperSuper Pro
Price alerts (price and move alerts)205050
    Saved-scan alerts-50100

The limits count alerts that interrupt you, by push, browser push or email. One alert sent to three channels counts once, and so does a bundle. The counts reset at midnight UTC. In Delivery > Daily limits you can lower either limit, and the meters show what you've used today. Past a limit, alerts still land in the Inbox.

    Bundled notifications

When a watchlist or universe alert fires on several tickers at once, you get one notification, not one per ticker. The first fire is sent right away. Fires from the same alert in the next 30 seconds arrive together as one notification that names them, such as "5 tickers rose 5% in 15 min". A bundle counts once against your daily limit.

The Inbox lists a bundle as one row, "5 alerts in one push", with when it was sent. Open the row to see each fire. A fire that arrived in a bundle shows the chip Sent in a bundle.

    The Inbox

Each row shows what fired and, on the right, what each channel did with it.

Open Alerts > Inbox. Click a row to open Why this alert fired beside the list.

    • Show: All, Price & moves, Scans or Held back. Held back lists fires that at least one channel didn't deliver, among the alerts loaded so far.
    • Mark all read clears the unread dots. Opening one alert doesn't mark the rest read.
    • Rows are grouped by day, in New York time. A dot after the title means unread.
    • Each row shows the alert's title, a detail line such as "3 new tickers", the alert it came from, the time, and a chip per channel.

    The detail panel shows:

    • Why it fired: the condition, the price, the level or range, and How, such as "It crossed the level". For a scan, the new tickers and how many tickers matched.
    • Delivery: one line per channel, such as Sent 9:32 AM, Held: quiet hours or Sent inside another push.
    • From the alert: what it fires on, how often, and where it sends. "This alert has since been deleted" when it's gone.
    • Actions: Open chart or Open scan, Edit alert, and Mute until tomorrow's session.

Push: held, quiet hoursYour quiet hours held it. It won't be sent later.

No channel triedThe alert fired and landed in your Inbox, but nothing was sent. See below.
Delivery not knownscanr no longer has the record of what each channel did with this fire.

    "No channel tried"

No channel tried means a check stopped the alert before scanr picked any channel, so only the Inbox got it. On the web, hover the label to see which check:

    The reason saysWhat happened
Held back by the alert's cooldownThe alert sent recently and its cooldown hadn't passed.
Fewer new tickers than this alert asks forA scan alert's rerun found fewer new tickers than its New tickers setting.

Your alerts were pausedPause everything was on.
Your plan sends this alert to the Inbox onlyYour plan doesn't send this kind of alert, such as a saved-scan alert after you move to Free.
This alert sends to the Inbox onlyEvery channel is off for this alert.

scanr keeps these reasons for 48 hours. On an older fire the label gives the likely reasons instead.

    Tips

    • Send yourself a test alert after you connect a channel, before you rely on it.
    • Keep Standard for everyday alerts and put the few that can't wait on Urgent. Then quiet hours do the rest.
    • Check Held back in the Inbox when an alert didn't reach you. It shows which channel held it and why.
