A theme is a group of stocks whose prices move together, such as silver miners or chip stocks. scanr regroups themes every week. The theme cards on your dashboard rank themes by strength and return and show how they move over time. To run your filters on one theme's members, see Scanning by theme.
Tour
Four cards read themes. Add any of them from the card picker, or load the Themes preset on the web for all of them at once. Your dashboard shows how.
- Theme Overview: every theme in one table, ranked by relative strength, with its direction over the last 20 sessions.
- Theme Performance: themes ranked by return over a period you pick, with each theme's top tickers.
- Theme History: a theme measure by theme over time. On the web, pick River Chart or Heatmap in its settings. On mobile, Theme History is the river chart and Theme Heatmap is its own card.
- Theme Motion (web): each theme as a point on three measures, played across the history window, with a price chart to drag the playhead along.

Read the Theme Overview
- Add Theme Overview. It opens sorted by Avg RS, strongest first.
- Sort by another column to rank by it. A second click reverses the order. Themes with no reading stay at the bottom either way.
- Open a theme for its details.
Click a column heading to sort. Hover a heading for what the column measures. Click a theme for its description and members.
Right-click a theme on Theme Overview or Theme Performance, or open its details, and choose Open in scanner. The scanner opens with that theme as its only theme and your other filters kept. It doesn't run the scan until you click Scan. Ask AI about this theme opens the AI Terminal on it.
Choose which themes the cards show
The dashboard has three theme settings that apply to every theme card. On the web, open Settings & layout, then Dashboard Settings.
- Hide size & float buckets: hides groups that formed on risk appetite and liquidity rather than a shared business. On by default.
- Theme liquidity floor: hides themes whose typical member trades less than this per day: Off, $1M, $5M, $10M, $25M or $100M. The typical member is the median member's 20-session dollar volume, so one heavyweight can't carry a basket of thinly traded stocks.
- Theme cards open on: which themes Theme History and Theme Motion show before you pick any: by Liquidity (the default), Performance, Relative volume or Relative strength.
Theme Overview and Theme Performance leave out the themes these settings hide, and say how many they left out. Click Show to bring them back. Theme History and Theme Motion use the settings only to pick the themes they open on. A theme you add yourself stays.
Mobile only.

Reading relative strength
Avg RS is a level: how strong the theme's stocks are today against the rest of the market. Slope is a direction: whether the same stocks are getting stronger or weaker. Read the two together. A high Avg RS with a negative slope is a strong theme that is fading. A low Avg RS with a positive slope is a weak theme that is improving.
Slope holds the members fixed, so a weekly regrouping can't make a theme look like it is fading. Trend uses each day's members, so it carries the steps a regrouping makes. The two can disagree, and the card shows both on purpose.
The slope comes with a fit quality, from 0 to 1. Below 0.3 the fit is weak: the ranks moved unevenly, so read the direction rather than the size.
A theme with fewer than 10 ranked members is marked Thin coverage and shown faded. Its average rests on a handful of stocks.
Theme Performance periods
Pick a period above the list: 1D, 1W, 1M, 3M, 6M, YTD or 1Y. The default is 1D. Each theme's return is the weighted average of its current stocks' returns since the close on the Since date. It measures today's members over the window, not the stocks the theme held in the past.
These periods look back from today. The time horizons on your scan performance look forward from each scan.

When the numbers update
- Every week: scanr regroups the themes.
- Every close: the day settles. Slope updates only at the close, so during the session it reads as of the previous close.
- During market hours: the newest column is today's session, marked Today · in progress. Its figures are cumulative so far today, so don't compare them with a closed day. Super and Super Pro see them live. On Free they are 15 minutes late, marked Today · in progress · 15m delayed.
Tips
- Sort Theme Overview by Slope to find themes whose stocks are getting stronger, then check Avg RS to see where they start from.
- Check Members before you trust a strong reading. An Avg RS of 90 over 4 stocks says less than one over 40.
- Set a Theme liquidity floor if you only trade liquid names. It clears out themes you couldn't trade in size.
- Compare Theme Performance on 1D and 3M. A theme that leads both has been strong for a while. One that leads only 1D may be a one-day move.
