Scanning by theme

A theme is a group of stocks whose prices move together, such as silver miners or enterprise software. scanr builds the groups from price behavior, not from industry labels, and rebuilds them every week. Scan by theme to run your filters on one group only.
Themes live in the scan's universe, not in a filter row. Your filters then run on the theme's members. To see which themes are strong right now, use the theme cards on the dashboard.
Tour
The Themes section of the universe settings holds:
- Search themes: finds a theme by name.
- Depth: how far into each theme the scan reaches.
- Theme rows: switch a theme on or off. The count, such as "12 of 15", is how many members reach the scan at this depth.
- Not in this week's classification: themes you picked that dropped out of this week's grouping.
Create and configure
- Click the gear icon to the right of Scan. The Select universe panel opens.
- Open Themes.
- Search for a theme and switch it on. Switch on more than one to scan them together.
- Set Depth.
- Run the scan.
Above the results, Themes: lists the themes the scan covered, and Depth: the depth it used.
From the dashboard
On a dashboard theme row, right-click and pick Open in scanner. Or open a theme and click Open in scanner in its dialog. The scanner opens with that theme as the only theme in the universe. Your filters stay. The scan doesn't run until you click Scan.

Weekly regrouping
scanr regroups the themes every week. A theme can change members, change its name, or drop out. A theme you picked that dropped out moves to Not in this week's classification and adds no stocks. Click Remove to take it out of the scan.
Theme strength
The dashboard's Theme Overview card ranks every theme by Avg RS, the average relative strength rank of its members, and shows whether it is gaining or losing strength. Themes on the dashboard explains each column. On Free, the strength columns show Upgrade to read theme strength.
To screen single stocks on strength, use the indicator filters such as Relative Strength (Market)>80.

Tips
- Start from Theme Overview. Sort by Avg RS, then open the top theme in the scanner.
- Keep the default depth. Core, satellite + loose pulls in stocks that barely trade with the theme.
- Check Not in this week's classification after the weekly regrouping. A dropped theme empties the scan.
- Add Relative Strength (Industry)>70 to find the leaders inside a theme.
