    Weinstein stage filters

    Available on: Web

    On this page

Stan Weinstein splits a stock's cycle into four stages: a base, an advance, a top and a decline. The stage filter finds stocks by the stage they are in this week, how many weeks they have been in it, and how strongly they are beating the S&P 500. A technical filter reads one indicator. A stage reads the whole trend.

The stage is read off the last completed week. It changes once a week, after Friday's close.

    Tour

Each item draws what its stage looks like: price with its 30-week average, and the 10-week where the sub-stage depends on it.

    • Stage button: the stages the row keeps, such as 2A or Stage 2, 4A. Click it to open the picker.
    • Find stage…: finds a stage by name, value or description.
    • Any Stage 1 to Any Stage 4: keeps every stock in that stage, whatever its sub-stage.
    • Sub-stages: the parts of a stage, such as 2A · Breakout or 2- · Pullback. Pick as many as you like, from any stage.
    • Weekly reading: opens this guide. The stage changes once a week.
    • Clear: removes every pick.

    Create and configure

    1. Click + on a filter group (or Add filter in an empty group), then Weinstein stage. The new row starts on sub-stage 2A, the breakout week.
    2. Click the stage button (it reads 2A) to open the picker. Pick any mix of whole stages (Any Stage 2) and sub-stages (2A · Breakout). A stock matches if it is in any of them. Picking all of a stage's sub-stages is the same as Any Stage for it.
    3. Optional: drag the Mansfield RS slider's handles to set a minimum or maximum. The bars behind it are the market's spread of readings, and the number under each handle is its value. 0 keeps stocks beating the S&P 500. A handle at the end of the slider sets no limit on that side, and its number is gray. For an exact value, click the number under a handle and type. Clear it to remove that limit.
    4. Optional: set Weeks in stage to keep stocks early (or late) in their stage. When the row picks one stage, it is a slider like Mansfield RS, over how many weeks stocks in that stage have been in it. Pick several stages and it shows min and max boxes instead, because each stage has its own spread.
    5. Optional: set Sessions ago and within to let the stage match on an earlier session. A week is about 5 sessions.
    6. Click Scan.

To rank the results by relative strength, click the gear icon to the right of Scan and set the Sort to Mansfield RS.

Every condition on one row must hold in the same week. Add a second row to ask about a different week.

On the mobile app, a scan with a stage filter runs and shows the row, and you can turn it off or remove it. Editing it needs the web app for now.

    Mansfield RS

Mansfield relative strength compares a stock with the S&P 500 against its own past year: ((close ÷ S&P 500) ÷ its 52-week average − 1) × 100. Above 0, the stock is beating the index by more than it usually does. A stock with under 52 weeks of history has no reading, never matches an RS bound and sorts last.

    On the ticker chart

A stock's page can draw its stage history on the price chart. Open the chart's settings (the gear above the chart) and, on the Chart tab, check Show stages under Weinstein stages. The same section has a color for each sub-stage, with Reset colors to go back to the defaults, and an info icon beside each one that says what it means. A stage's own row (Stage 2 · Advancing) colors every week of that stage that has no color of its own. These choices are remembered in this browser, not in chart presets.

    • Stage band: the chart's background is shaded by stage, one color per stage until you pick your own. Each stage is captioned where it starts (4, 1, 2A). Late weeks (2B, 4B) are shaded darker and pullback weeks (2-, 4-) lighter.
    • Breakout and breakdown weeks: a diamond marks the first bar of each 2A and 4A week. Click it for the week, the weeks in stage and the Mansfield RS.
    • A week's reading: the chart's legend has a Stage row with the sub-stage of the bar under your pointer, such as Stage 4-. With the pointer off the chart it shows the current week.
    • Scanning a breakout week: click a bar in a 2A week for a card with Scan today's 2A breakouts and, where your plan has the Time Machine, Scan 2A breakouts that week. Press Esc or click anywhere else to close it.
    • Mansfield RS: a pane under the chart, with a dashed line at 0.

The band changes on week boundaries. On a daily chart a week's shading runs from its Friday to the next Thursday, the sessions that carry it. A weekly bar shows its own week, and a monthly bar the last week ending in the month. Weeks with no reading, such as a stock's first 30 weeks or the weeks after a long gap in its trading, have no shading.

    Tips

    • Prefer sub-stages to whole stages to find a new trend. Stage 2 alone holds every advancing stock, early or late.
    • Sort by Mansfield RS when you scan for breakouts. Weinstein's checklist favors the strongest.
    • Run a stage scan after Friday's close. The reading does not move during the week.
