    Price and move alerts

Available on: Web · iOS · Android

    On this page

A price or move alert watches prices tick by tick and tells you the moment your condition is met: a breakout above a level, a pullback into a buy zone, or a sudden 5% drop. Point one at a single ticker, every ticker on a watchlist, or a whole universe of stocks.

    Tour

The preview on the right shows the notification as it will read, where it sends, and how much of your alert limit it uses.

    • When: what the alert watches. A ticker, A watchlist, A universe or A saved scan.
    • Condition: the ticker or list, then the condition sentence, such as "AAPL crosses above $200".
    • How often: how many times it may fire.
    • Hours: Regular hours, or Include extended hours for pre-market and after-hours.
    • Deliver with and Channels: the delivery profile and any channel you change for this alert alone. See Alert delivery and the Inbox.
    • Note: your own words, shown with the alert when it fires.
    • Preview: the notification, the route it sends to, and "Uses 1 of your 200 alerts".

    Create and configure

    1. Open the composer: New alert in the Alerts hub, or Set alert on a ticker's page.
    2. Under When, pick A ticker, A watchlist or A universe.
    3. Pick the ticker, list or universe.
    4. Pick the condition and fill in its numbers.

The condition menu has two tabs. Conditions lists every condition. Presets fills one in for you: round levels, the day high and low, the previous close and the 52-week high near the current price, common % moves such as +5% in 5 min, and day changes of 3%, 5% and 10%. Hover a preset to see it on the chart.

    1. Under How often, pick how many times it may fire.
    2. Under Hours, pick Regular hours or Include extended hours.
    3. Optional: pick a delivery profile, change a channel, or add a Note.
    4. Click Create alert.

On the web, when the ticker has bars for its latest session, a 5-minute chart under the form draws the alert at its level. After you create an alert, scanr asks once per browser: Get this alert with scanr closed? Click Allow to turn on browser push here.

To edit an alert, open it from My alerts (All alerts in the app), from the Inbox, or from Set alert on the ticker's page. You can change everything except the kind of condition and what it watches. To change those, create a new alert.

crosses aboveThe price crosses up through your level.A tickerAAPL crosses above $200, the level it keeps failing at.
crosses belowThe price crosses down through your level.A tickerTSLA crosses below its $240 support.
crossesThe price crosses your level either way.A tickerSPY crosses $500, up or down.
enters the rangeThe price moves into your band.A tickerMSFT enters $400–$410.
leaves the rangeThe price breaks out of your band, either side.A tickerNVDA leaves $180–$195.
enters or leaves the rangeEither of the above.A ticker
moves within a windowThe price rises, falls, or moves either way by your % within a rolling window of 1 to 60 minutes.A ticker, watchlist or universeTSLA falls 5% within 10 min.
changes on the dayThe price is up, down, or either by your % from the previous close.A ticker, watchlist or universeAAPL is down 3% on the day.

A watchlist or universe alert only offers the two move conditions, since one price level means nothing across many stocks.

A new level alert starts 5% from the current price. If the price is already past your level when you save, the alert waits for a fresh cross. My alerts shows it as "Already past the trigger, waits for a fresh cross".

Volume confirmation. A moves within a window alert has a Confirmation row. Pick Volume confirms and set the shares that must trade in the window (50,000 to start). The alert then skips thin, low-volume spikes.

Every time, with a cooldownFires each time the condition is met, at most once per cooldown (30 min to start, 1 min at least). It also waits for the price to pull back 0.5% before it can fire again.

A universe alert offers Once per session and Every time only.

    Watchlists and universes

    • A watchlist alert watches every ticker on the list. Add or remove a ticker and the alert follows. Your plan caps the tickers per alert: 50 on Free, 250 on Super, 1,000 on Super Pro.
    • A universe alert watches an index (S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Dow Jones Industrial Average), a theme, an industry, or every US stock. It needs Super or Super Pro.
    • A universe alert has Guards, which pick the stocks that count: a price range (from $5 to start), a minimum average daily dollar volume ($10 million to start) and, if you like, market caps from Micro to Mega. Every universe alert needs a price floor and a volume floor. scanr checks the guards once a session, on the previous close and the 20-day average volume.
    • When several tickers fire within 30 seconds, you get one notification that names them. See bundled notifications.

    Statuses

    StatusWhat it meansWhat to do
    ActiveWatching the price.
TriggeredA Once alert fired and stopped.Re-arm it to watch again.
PausedYou paused it. It doesn't count toward your alert limit.Resume it.
Over quotaYour plan allows fewer active alerts than you have.Choose which to keep in My alerts.
UnavailableIt can't run: its watchlist was deleted or is empty, or your plan doesn't include it. The row says which. For a deleted watchlist, use Point at another watchlist. Otherwise add tickers, upgrade or delete it.

    Managing alerts

In My alerts, search by ticker, list, scan or condition, filter by Status and Kind, and group by kind, subject, delivery profile or status. Each row's menu has Edit, Duplicate, Pause or Resume, Re-arm, History, Mute until tomorrow's session and Delete. Tick several rows to pause, resume or delete them together. A delete offers Undo.

Mute until tomorrow's session silences one alert until 4:00 AM ET on the next trading day. It keeps firing into the Inbox, but nothing is sent until then.

    Tips

    • For a breakout, use crosses above with Once. For a level you trade around all day, use Every time with a cooldown so a wiggle doesn't fire it twice in a minute.
    • On a watchlist, a % move with Volume confirms filters out moves on a handful of trades.
    • On the Free plan, alerts check 15-minute delayed prices. For a fast move, set the level a little early, or upgrade for realtime.
    • Draw your levels on the chart and set alerts from them. See Chart alert lines.

My level alert never fired, though the price is past it.The price was already past the level when you saved, so the alert waits for a fresh cross.Set the level on the other side of the price, or wait for the price to come back and cross.

The same ticker keeps alerting me.It is set to Every time with a short cooldown.Raise the cooldown, switch to Once per session, or Mute until tomorrow's session.
